I have had the pleasure of working with the Pinot Noir from High Rock Ranch for the past couple of vintages. The wines are rich, juicy, and balanced and were a complement to our Pinot Noir program. The vines are finding their footing nicely and are in good health - I've never seen issues with virus and any mildew and/or botrytis pressure is minimal thanks to the hillside exposure. Tim is wonderful to work with and takes great pride in his ranch - as he should. The Pinot should continue to develop nicely, and the quality potential is high.

For over 10 years the High Rock Ranch has been a key component to the brand architecture here at Copain Wines. From our single vineyard Syrah bottlings to our Yorkville Highlands Syrah blends, High Rock has been a unique contributor to our wines. At High Rock, it is the best of both worlds. The wines share characteristics of both warm and cool climate wines. Plush and deep in color, but not too plush. Sturdy and structured but not overly tannic. The wines have a radiant, nimble feel yet still have deep dark complexity and seemingly endless layers as the wines open up more with each swirl. With the recent addition of Grenache and Mourvèdre to the Vineyard the potential for High Rock skyrockets. The flavor profiles that Grenache and Mourvèdre provide bring the opportunity for very fresh and interesting blending opportunities.

The Yorkville AVA is a great place to grow Pinot Noir. This is particularly true at the westernmost end of the AVA, where cold air flow from the frigid Pacific Ocean makes its way inland through low spots in the coast range. This area has the greatest diurnal variation of any of the dozen or so vineyards with which we work. The relatively warm daytime temperatures encourage great flavor and tannin development, while the cold nighttime temperatures retain acidity and freshness in our wines. The geology and the soil’s parent minerals help achieve elegance and complexity. The wines we make from this AVA are standouts. Find their wines…

Weir Vineyard is an experiment in Mother Nature’s winemaking. It is distinctive in that its terroir is unmistakably pronounced in the high quality grapes, overflowing with the minerals and forests of the Yorkville Highlands in Mendocino County. (read on)
